Brief Description: An ancient language of Northern Africa. An offshoot of Phoenician, this was the language of Carthage and its empire, and developed from the variety of Phoenician brought to North Africa by colonies from the Phoenician city of Tyre. In the period of the Roman empire, the language was gradually supplanted by Latin, but remained spoken in rural areas until the end of the Roman period. The language appears in two versions: Punic, the older version of the language, and Neo-Punic, the later version. 1st Millennium BC - 600 AD.
