Brief Description:
"Shasta (proper), the only Shastan language to survive into the twentieth century, was originally spoken in several dialects in California across a relatively large territory that included Scotts Valley, near modern Etna and Ft. Jones; Shasta Valley, around Yreka; and the Klamath River between Karuk and Klamath-Modoc territory. Many modern Shastas have merged their political and cultural identity with the Karuk Tribe and consider Karuk their heritage language. (Shasta is often used as the cover term for all of the Shastan languages, a family of four languages.) See also New River Shasta, Okwanuchu, and Konomihu."
