Make a Comment on Language Identification/Classification

The language codes used by LINGUIST are those of the ISO 639-3 code-set, which is built upon a unification of the Ethnologue system, produced and maintained by the Summer Institute of Linguistics, and the LINGUIST set of codes for ancient languages. This system assigns a 3-letter code to every distinct natural language known. LINGUIST has supplemented this system with appropriate subgrouping information.
Most of the codes you will see, then, are Ethnologue codes, and did not originate with LINGUIST, nor are they controlled by it. As a service to our users, however, this page will forward all comments on Ethnologue codes to the Summer Institute of Linguistics. But be aware that no code can be changed without going through the ISO 639-3 Registration Authority. The process and forms required are available at the ISO 639-3 Registration Authority site.
