Brief Description:
Galician-Portuguese or Old Portuguese was a West Iberian Romance language was originated in the area between the Bay of Biscay and the Douro River, As the Christian Reconquest proceeded, it expanded south into what is now Portugal. Some words of the language first appear in 870 AD in church document called Doação à Igreja de Sozello, but the Notícia de fiadores, written in 1175, is probably the oldest known document written entirely in Galician-Portuguese. By the end of the 12th century the language was in full use, both in prose and poetry. The language had a special role in the Iberian peninsular during the Middle Ages, in that it was the normal language of lyric poetry. It is the language from which Modern Portuguese, Galician and Fala all descend. 870 AD - 1400 AD.
